Diet Tips Following a Urostomy

Last updated 01/06/20

Unless your healthcare team gives you specific instructions, people with a urostomy do not need a special diet.

However, there are a few tips you may want to keep in mind to avoid infections and urine odours:

  • Drink at least six to eight cups (1.4 – 1.9 litres) of water and other fluids per day.
  • You may want to limit certain foods that cause urine odour. These include[1]:
    • Asparagus
    • Fish
    • Eggs
    • Alcohol
    • Vegetables, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and brussel sprouts
    • Cheese (certain types)
    • Baked beans
    • Onions
  • Some foods help fight urine odour. You may want to increase your intake of:
    • Cranberry juice
    • Buttermilk
    • Parsley
    • Yogurt
